Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences Special Collections, on Flickr!

I just learned, via the blog Bottled Monsters, about the addition of another library collection to the Flickr web-o-sphere: the Special Collections of the Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences, Virginia Commonwealth University. Above are some of my favorites, including a collection of students posing with their dissections, but this is just a small taste of what they've got to offer. See the full collection here.

I love the caption on the one photo of the dissection: "We have shuffled off his mortal coil."

Edward Tufte would decry first image as terrible distortion of statistics. It's a classic because the illustrator scaled the height of the model, not the area. So instead of a factor of about 4.5, they've represented a factor of 20 difference between before and after images.

I have a copy of a photo from the L & H Medical College 1908 that is covered with morbid witicisms . . . "usefulness does not end after death," "their good deeds do follow them," "they lived not in vain," etc. But the best (worst?) is one of the cadavers is sitting slumped over with his hand in a bucket on which the words "soup 5 cents" is painted.
